What is menthol?

The menthol flavor is obtained from the leaves of several mint plants, among which peppermint and spearmint stand out. The cold sensation it produces is due to its ability to activate cold-sensitive receptors in the body.

The use of menthol goes back even further than Rizla. Its name comes from the Greek word "mentha", which means mint, and it is said that in ancient Greece it was spread on the ground as an air freshener.

Apparently, in ancient Egypt, as early as 1550 BC, mint was considered so valuable that it was used as currency, hence the origin of the word "mint" or "mint coin"! I bet you didn't know?

Menthol was first isolated as a scent in 1771 by the German Hieronymus David Gaubius. Now we've written our final chapter with the tips for the menthol filter and flavour cards, the appearance of which came before the much-heralded menthol ban in the summer of 2020.
